It Is Unfair To Reduce Chibok Girls’ Abduction To Jonathan’s Fault, Says Presidency

Presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati, in an article published on Wednesday in the Washington Times titled: “Nigeria’s Offensive against Boko Haram; Charges of a Do-Nothing Strategy are Misconceived”, said President Goodluck Jonathan was fully committed to ensuring that the abducted girls are rescued alive.
The school girls were kidnapped by by Boko Haram insurgents on April 14 in Chibok, Borno State and remain in captivity 88 days later. Though the Nigerian military says it knows their whereabouts but is careful on applying force to secure their release as it might result in heavy collateral damage.
Abati lamented: “Yes, it has been more than 80 days since the nightmare began. Americans, Canadians, the British and other friends of Nigeria are all involved in the search, in one form or the other, but unfortunately, with all the technology and intelligence at their disposal, the girls are yet to be found”.
According to Abati, President Jonathan is keenly aware of his responsibility for the safety, security and well-being of the Chibok girls and all Nigerians.
“He wants the girls back like everyone else and is doing everything within his powers to rescue them safely and return them to their distraught parents.Continue…

Lagos Police command arrests armed robbers using police uniforms

Four armed robbers who specialize in robbing with police uniforms have been arrested and paraded by the Lagos state Police command. The four men named Julius George, Samuel Orgah, Lucky Oliseh and Lucky Friday were arrested by the police force at the Ile Zik area on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway on the 22nd of June Punch reports.

From their confessions, it was gathered that other operations carried out by the gang included robbing a trailer load of rice at Oju-Elegba area worth N4.5m and a tanker carrying engine oil worth N11m. They were arrested during the Ile Zik area operation, which was said to be their fourth operation, and involving about N8m. Continue...

Ring leader of the gang, 34 year old Julius George from Benue state who is married with children in his confessional statement said he led the other men into the act by deceiving them that he was a police man. He said he bought the police uniform materials in the market, made them into the uniforms and gave them to his gang members.
"This was not the first time we would use police uniforms for robbery. In 2013, I was arrested by the police and charged to court. I was remanded for some time, but my family came and I was released on bail. Later, the court discharged me for want of evidence. While in remand at the Kirikiri Prisons, I met Sam (Orgah). When I came out of prisons, a friend of mine called Benjamin invited me again for another job. I was asked to escort a truck of engine oil from Apapa to Mushin, because they still regarded me as a policeman. They paid me N5,000 when they offloaded.” he said
33 year old Samuel Orgah who is also from Benue state said he was an imprisoned armed robber who took to his bad ways after he regained his freedom in 2011. For Oliseh Lucky from Delta state, he said he came in contact with the gang leader,  George, only three weeks before their arrest when George invited him for the N8m robbery in Ile Zik area.

Friday Lucky who says he is a clearing and forwarding agent working at a shipping company in Apapa Lagos said he met George three months ago at Iyana-Oba and had never engaged in armed robbery. He said he was only invited to help collect money for Friday and did not know he was an armed robber
“I have never gone on an operation with Mopol before. He only invited me to come with him to collect money. I did not know it was robbery,” he said.
The Lagos Police PRO Ngozi Baide says the State men are currently being investigated.

Cameron Diaz says she doesn't want kids of her own

It's one thing for a woman not to be able to have kids but when a woman who can have kids says she doesn't want them, I do a double take. Actress Cameron Diaz, 41, told the August edition of Esquire Magazine that kids were not on her agenda.
"It’s so much more work to have children. To have lives besides your own that you are responsible for - I didn’t take that on. That did make things easier for me. A baby - that’s all day, every day for 18 years. Not having a baby might really make things easier, but that doesn’t make it an easy decision'.

63 abducted Borno women reportedly escape from Boko Haram

63 women out of 70 women who were reported to have been abducted by Boko Haram men in Borno state between June 12th - June 14th have regained their freedom. Reports by government sources as well as members of the Borno state vigilante group confirmed their escape.

An official of the Borno state vigilante group, Abbas Gava while confirming the escape to journalists in Borno, said the women made the bold move to escape yesterday Saturday July 5th while the sect men were attacking a military base in Damboa. Continue...
"I have just received an alert from my colleagues in Damboa area that about 63 of the abducted women and girls had made it back home. They took the bold step when their abductors moved out to carry out an operation. We don’t have the details of their escape yet, but we believe God gave them the opportunity at the time the insurgents came in their large numbers to attack Damboa where about 12 soldiers, five policemen, over 50 Boko Haram members and unspecified number of civilians were killed yesterday (Saturday).”he said. Mr. Gava also said five women and two girls are currently still with the sect men, adding that one of the women is said to be a nursing mother.
A security official who also spoke with Premium Times anonymously confirmed the escape of the women
"There is no doubt about your report; the women and girls were able to escape. I guess it was during the time the gunmen were attacking Damboa,  left behind just some few men to watch over the women, but the women took advantage of an opportunity when the guys were dozing off, and bolted away but quietly" the source said. The source also added that some of the escaped women found themselves on the border towns between Adamawa and Borno state and have been taken into custody by the soldiers there. Some others who knew the terrain of the bushes were able to find their way home.
The Borno state government has not made any official statement on this.
