Brazil 2014: Super Eagles Vs. Iran, what Nigerians should expect – Coach Keshi

Nigeria steps out tonight for her first game at the World Cup in Brazil.
The Super Eagles will slug it out with Head Coach Stephen Keshi said yesterday that his side will take it one game at a time.
Super-Eagles-
Super-Eagles-

Upbeat midfielder Mikel Obi vowed that the team would do well. The Super Eagles will play Iran at 8.pm Nigerian time at Arena da Baixada in Curitiba. The Super Eagles will be hoping to better their two previous World Cup positions, where they failed to get out of the group stage in 2002 and 2010.
However, Keshi said, their focus is on Carlos Quieroz’s side today and the team has ambition to make Nigeria and Africa proud.
Argentina and Bosnia-Herzegovina are the other teams in the group. ”Today, as I speak, I know we are going to play Iran on June 16. There are two other matches in the group phase, against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Argentina, but our focus for now is what we must achieve against Iran in Curitiba.” Keshi told Team Nigeria
”There would have been no reason to take part in the qualifying series if we didn’t believe we would make it to the finals, and there would have been no reason to prepare so hard for the finals if we knew we were only coming to Brazil to make up the number.
”I have a group of players who believe in themselves. They want to go as far as they can in Brazil, and the formula we will employ is to look at what is immediately in front of us and focus and plan on how to tackle it.”
While the Super Eagles boss believes inexperience grounded the Eagles in 1994 and 1998, he believes there is a good blend of youth and experience in the current squad.
”Both situations were unfortunate. That is why you must always focus on your immediate challenge. We definitely lost to inexperience in 1994. Here in Brazil, we have a mixture of youth and experience. We are ready to fly.”
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Aminu Maigari said the Super Eagles were ready for their World Cup opener, adding that the spirit in the camp is good.
”Our boys are ready for this task. I have been with the team all the way from London (friendly with Scotland) to their final camping in the USA and now here in Brazil.
“The presence of the Federal Government delegation, the kind words of the members of the delegation and the arrival of the NFF delegation have all boosted the morale of our team in a big way. The boys know that the government and people of Nigeria are with them and they know what they have to do to make Nigeria and Africa proud. The spirit is good and I believe they will go all out.”
Mikel Obi reiterated Nigeria’s ambition to do well. Having missed the previous showpiece in South Africa through injury, Mikel has admitted that he is keen to achieve something with the team, in his maiden appearance at the Mundial.
“This is my first World Cup. I want to make sure we achieve something coming here. We don’t just want to come and make up the numbers; we want to do well,” Mikel told FIFA’s official website before the team left for Curitiba.
“I have to make sure I lead by example. We are all driving in the same direction. We all know what we want and, hopefully, we will have a good tournament.”
Just like in 1994, Nigeria came to the World Cup as African champions. Mikel believes that that achievement has given the Super Eagles extra motivation to do well and satisfy the weighty expectations of the continent. “We know we’re the African champions and people expect us to do well, to represent the African continent. That’s a bit more extra pressure but it’s pressure that we love. We love to be African champions,” he said.
Nigeria will be facing a side that is built around a solid defensive base but with few technically gifted players in attack. Iran will aim to frustrate a Nigeria side that is naturally better suited to counter-attack out of its comfort zone.
Iran manager Queiroz sets up his side to defend, likely in a 4-4-1-1/4-2-3-1 shape, relying on experience and discipline (11 of the 23 members over the age of 30) to maintain its defensive shape so that it is tough to beat. Highlighting the strength of this defensive unit, Iran conceded just seven goals in 16 qualifying matches on the road to Brazil; although the asterisk alongside this figure is the level of competition that Iran met during qualifying was usually of inferior quality to what it will meet at the World Cup.
If there’s a plus in Iran’s attack, it is Fulham’s Ashkan Dejagah, who will either start out wide on the left or in the hole behind striker Reza Ghoochannejhad of Charlton.
Nigeria’s front three will be charged with breaking down the Iranian defence. Mikel is usually deployed as the most attacking member of Nigeria’s midfield trio, lining up in a 4-3-3/4-5-1 shape.

FIFA Ranking: Nigeria Least-Ranked Among World Cup First Round Group Foes— May 9, 2014

eagles
The world football governing body, FIFA, on Thursday placed Nigeria 44th in its ranking table for the month of May, with the African champions moving up by one spot.
The ranking, which is coming just 35 days to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, sees Nigeria having 631 points.
It has thus placed the Nigerian Super Eagles as the least-ranked team among their Group F foes in the First Round of the mundial which begins on June 12 in Brazil.
Nigeria were 45th in April and are now ranked 44th while Argentina, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iran were placed 7th, 25th and 37th respectively.
Argentina have 1178 points, while Bosnia-Herzegovina have 795 points and Iran have 715 points.
In the African top 10, Nigeria are the only African country which moved up, leaving Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt, Algeria, Ghana and Cape Verde on the same spot they occupied in April.
With the May ranking, Nigeria still remained the sixth-placed team in Africa with the first five teams in Africa having 830, 798, 795, 713 and 665 points respectively.
On the global scene, 2014 World Cup hosts Brazil displaced Colombia for the fourth position by climbing two spots to stay behind Spain, Germany and Portugal respectively.

Manchester City Style Good For EPL Title Win – Pellegrinit

Manchester-City-manager-Manuel-Pellegrini

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini feels the way that his side have played this season is as important as winning the Premier League.
Pellegrini’s men surged two points clear of Liverpool at the top of the table with one game left to play after a 4-0 win over Aston Villa on Wednesday, with a draw against West Ham on Sunday now enough to clinch the title on account of their superior goal difference.
City have netted 100 times in this season’s Premier League and can top Chelsea’s record of 103 with a convincing win the final day of the season, which would be just as significant as far as Pellegrini is concerned.
“Now we can talk about the title because if we win the next game we are going to win the title,” said the Chilean, who is approaching the end of his first season in charge at the Etihad Stadium.
“It will be very important not only for the title, but in the way that we are going to win the title.
“I think that we have a style of play, I think that we are an attractive team, I think that we score many goals, that we are always thinking to score more goals and that for me has the same importance as the title.
“I am very happy to have managed this team in that way.

World Cup: Super Eagles ‘ll Make Africa Proud, Says Maigari

The President, Nigeria Football Association, Aminu Maigari, says the Super Eagles will make the country and Africa proud at the World Cup scheduled for Brazil in June.
“The Super Eagles are going to the World Cup with the sole intention of making Nigeria and Africa proud, ’’ he said in an interview published on CAF website on Tuesday.
Maigari said top quality warm-up matches had been arranged for the Eagles to keep them in form ahead of the global football fiesta.
The New Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that FIFA World Cup is scheduled to hold from June 12 to July 13.
He added:“Nigeria is going to Brazil to make sure that we make the entire continent of Africa proud.
“We want to show that African football has grown and improved a lot over the years.
“Under my leadership at NFA, we have done away with short-term planning.
“Instead, we are focused on long-term objectives and planning. Very soon, the team will be moving to the training camp to prepare for the biggest world football event.
“We have arranged top quality warm-up matches for our team to give as much adequate preparations as possible.”
The NFA president promised that no opponent would be taken for granted, saying “all the participating teams are coming to the tournament to win.’’
“Every team will be making preparations and there is no underrating any opponent since there are no more small teams or weak sides.
“Each of the 32 teams that qualified for the World Cup cannot be underrated. We will go to Brazil and set out to give and do our best and see how far that takes us.”
Maigari expressed the hope that a good blend of youths with experienced players would produce positive results for Nigeria.
“What we have done with our team is to mix these young players with experienced ones.
“We did this during the Africa Cup of Nations and FIFA Confederations Cup in 2013 and it is a strategy that we believe will serve us well,” he said. (NAN)

I’m Not Leaving Before World Cup – Prandelli

Cesare Prandelli has ruled out the possibility of parting ways with Italy before the World Cup, despite his long-term future being in limbo.
The Azzurri lost 1-0 to Spain on Wednesday in an international friendly as they continue their build-up to the summer’s tournament in Brazil, where they have been grouped with Uruguay, England and Costa Rica.
Prandelli had been linked with a departure from the national set-up in recent months, although the coach claimed in early March that he had changed his mind and wanted to remain coaching the Euro 2012 finalists.
Regardless, the former Fiorentina trainer says that he has no intention of leaving his position before the World Cup and has demanded that the nation steps up to match competition from the likes of la Roja.
“If I find an agreement for a contract renewal, good; otherwise I will still stand firm,” he is quoted by Ansa as saying. “If I left it would be an embarrassment for me: the World Cup is too important.
“Europe moves on quickly and we have to keep in touch with other nations. We do not have big names or big numbers, but we must make up for that with great ideas.
The Italy boss was also heavily critical of his players’ fitness in comparison to Vicente del Bosque’s men and thinks that they were vastly inferior in sharpness compared to the world and European champions on Wednesday.
“At this moment of the season the fitness levels compared to Spain are almost embarrassing,” he told Rai Sport. “We need to work hard, as to play with a high tempo we need intensity in our running.
“We wanted to win the ball back early, we never managed it because we weren’t physically sharp enough. I’ll be honest, I did not expect the players to have these fitness levels.”

Okocha Wants Osaze, Uche, Yobo, Included In World Cup Team

Augustin Okocha, former Super Eagles’ prolific midfielder, on Saturday suggested the inclusion of Osaze Odemwingie, Ikechukwu Uche and Joseph Yobo in the team to represent Nigeria at the World Cup finals in Brazil.
Okocha told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the trio would apply their experience for the team to perform well in Brazil.
“The three players have been an integral part of the Eagles for long and they are also quality players that play regular competitive matches in Europe.
“They are hardworking players that are aware of the challenges and the expectations of the team in a World Cup competition, especially Yobo and Odemwingie.
“Their experiences really matter in a World Cup setting, while Uche’s call-up will be great because he has been a fantastic player yet to feature at this level,’’ Okocha said.
The ex-international also lauded plans to feature young players in the tournament, describing it as a positive development.
“The young players we parade have proved themselves by qualifying for the World Cup in Brazil. They went ahead to win the 2013 African Nations Cup in South Africa.
“They are indeed players to write home about. However, the World Cup is a different ball game, so they need to play at top level.
“The World Cup is a different ball game where experience and discipline matter; so a blend of these young players with the older ones, will yield good result,’’ he suggested.
The Brazil 2014 World Cup would begin on June 12.
Jermain Defoe

Defoe Hopes For World Cup Place

Jermain Defoe is hopeful his form for Toronto will see him book a place in England‘s World Cup squad.
The striker scored two goals inside the opening 25 minutes of his debut for the MLS side on Saturday as Toronto beat Seattle Sounders 2-1 in their opening game of the new season.
Roy Hodgson will announce his provisional 30-man squad for the tournament in mid-May and Defoe says all he can do is concentrate on his performances for his new side and hope the manager takes note.
“I think the most important thing for me is just to focus on playing here, winning games, and working hard for the team and obviously, trying to score goals,” he told reporters.
“Obviously with the England thing, you know obviously it’s gonna be at the back of my mind, but I’m sure if someone said to Roy Hodgson ‘you know, if you haven’t seen, Jermain scored two goals,’ then maybe he won’t be surprised.”
Defoe has 19 goals in 55 appearances for England.
