New Anti Fraud technology uses colour, symbols, numbers

0
Researchers have unveiled a new, safer system using colours and symbols as well as numbers.
They say it could cut ATM fraud dramatically.
The keypad of the future? The colours and symbols move around each time the pad is used, and are displayed on its screen

HOW IT WORKS

A user chooses a PIN with a combination of numbers, colours and shapes/symbols: for example – 3, square, pink, flag.
Each time that the user has to input their pin, the colours and symbols randomly change position on the keypad, so you’re never pressing the same sequence of keys.
Called Tri-Pin, the idea came to inventor Glynn Reynolds after a friend was a victim of ATM fraud.
‘Tri-pin is a very simple, but effective idea with a higher level of security than traditional PINs,’ he said.
The system would avoid many current practices used by fraudster to steal PIN numbers, such as ‘shoulder surfing’ to see which keys are being pressed.
Because different keys would be pressed every time a withdrawl was made, it would be impossible to find a PIN without seeing the screen and keypad clearly.
‘It looks like much like any other 10 digit keypad, but instead of each button having just a number, they also have a colour and a symbol/shape,’ the firm says.

It could also be used to unlock smartphones, tablets and even doors, the firm says.
‘The great thing about TRI-PIN is that it’s a software solution, so if it was available on Apple/Android, all you need to do is update current devices rather than upgrade or change them,’ said Reynolds.
The first company to use TRI-PIN is Lunabee on there oneSafe app on iPhone, iPad and Mac.

ASUP to meet with FG over lingering strike.

0
In a bid to   resolve the ongoing seven months strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics,
ASUP, the Federal Government would  meet with the leadership of the union today in Abuja.
The meeting is expected to be presided over by the Supervising Minister of Education, Barr. Nyesom Wike.
The Minister will after the meeting brief leaders of the National Association of Polytechnic Students on efforts of the Federal Government to improve polytechnic education in the country.
The meeting is also aimed at reaching an agreement on the last issue yet to be resolved from the list of demands placed by ASUP before the Federal Government.
Under the High Impact Development Scheme through TETFUND, the administration invested N12 billion to improve facilities in 12 selected polytechnics, with each of the polytchnics getting N1billion .
The administration also released a grant of N1 billion to federal and state polytechnics for the provisions of state-of-the-art laboratories, refurbishing of old laboratories and the training of staff on the handling of newly acquired equipment.
It would be recalled that the Minister had met with ASUP leadership in October 2013 after the commencement of the strike, with both parties reaching key decisions.
Since then, both the Minister of Education and the Minister of Labour have met with officials of ASUP at different points, briefing them on the key steps taken for the White Paper to be released.
It has been on the premise of these negotiations that the Federal Government declared that ASUP leadership should call off the on-going strike and allow for the complete resolution of the outstanding issue in contention.

Teen kills sister for being ungrateful

Police say a 14-year-old confessed to stabbing to death her 11-year-old sister(in above picture) in Illinois because the little girl had been ungrateful.
The victim, identified as Dora Berancourt, was knifed 40 times in her chest, neck and arms.
The 14-year-old has been charged with murder and will be tried in a juvenile court, as police keep probing the case.
The prosecution said the older girl set the alarm early so she could get to her sister while she was still in bed in their home in Mundelein, a small town just outside Chicago.
She took a knife from the kitchen and went to her sister’s bedroom.

The girls’ mother was not at home at the time of the attack
With each strike of the knife, prosecutors said, the suspect yelled reasons for her attack.
The 14-year-old girl told prosecutor she was furious because she had performed several domestic duties, such as making dinner, and her sister had been ungrateful.
She was also angry because Dora had hit her the night before, she told prosecutors.
Officials said the girls’ mother, the only adult living in the home, was at work when the stabbing took place.
The woman cried at a court appearance where details of the case were given.
The next court appearance is set for January 31.
The Chicago Tribune reported that a group of women in Mundelein are raising funds to help the family – so far making about $6,000 (£3,600)
