Labor and progressive groups in California are calliwng for a major increase in the minimum wage, aiming to reach $30 an hour by 2030 in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area. The push is being led by the Living Wage for All Coalition, which argues that current wages do not match California’s high cost of living.

Supporters propose a phased increase of about $1.50 per year, saying the plan is realistic due to expected economic activity from major upcoming events like the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, the World Cup, and the Super Bowl. They cite data showing that 75% of restaurant workers spend over half their income on rent, highlighting the affordability crisis.

However, small business owners and economists warn the increase could raise prices, reduce jobs, and lead to closures. California already has one of the highest minimum wages in the country at $16.50 statewide, with higher pay for fast-food and healthcare workers. A recent $20 minimum wage for fast-food employees has already been linked to price hikes and restaurant shutdowns.

The momentum is growing beyond Los Angeles. The city recently approved a $30 wage by 2028 for hotel and airport workers, and similar campaigns are planned for San Francisco and Alameda County. Outside California, New York City’s mayor-elect has also signaled interest in pursuing a $30 minimum wage by 2030.

While the movement is gaining attention, its long-term economic impact remains a point of debate.
