First Bank, Others , Kick-off Consumers’ Loan Offer

FirstBank, Nigeria’s best banking brand, Intel Nigeria and Slot Limited, a leading retailer in mobile devices, have thrown their weight behind an initiative that offers the public the opportunity to purchase personal computers and tablets now and pay later. The scheme which is open to employees of private and public organisations, entrepreneurs, and cooperative associations and unions, provides a wide range of Lenovo, Asus and Samsung products which are paid for over a period of one year.
Speaking on the initiative, country manager, Intel, Olubunmi Ekundayo said, “The scheme is part of the goal of Intel to make technology more accessible to everyone.”
We have harmonized plans with all the partners to make customers acquisition of PCs and tablets simpler and easier. We believe that this will go a long way in helping to bridge the digital divide.”
FirstBank, in a statement, said that it is committed to creatively meet customers’ needs, and that this collaboration with Intel and Slot is one of its many initiatives to improve quality of lives and meet the personal and business demands of its customers.
Adim Isiakpona, marketing and PR manager, Intel, gave more insights into the scheme as he explained that individuals and corporate entities can purchase quality Intel-powered PC’s by walking into any Slot Outlet near them, pick up a Proforma invoice for the device bundle and visit the nearest First Bank branch for onward processing.
Isiakpona further explained that as an added bonus, customers will be entitled to a free Etisalat Internet dongle plus 200MB data card and genuine Microsoft Office on laptops and 200MB data card on the device purchased.  All devices will also have access to Intel Explore and Learn Marketplace with free Educational and learning content for all customers to enjoy.
You will recall that as part of efforts to increase customers acquisition, Intel had started a PC acquisition scheme called ‘Create your tomorrow’ in 2012, and has partnered with other financial institutions in the past to make acquisition simplier. The consumer loan scheme with FirstBank and Slot will ease the process of owning Intel powered PCs and Tablets, while relying on a stress-free monthly installmental payment process.

Popular actor, John Okafor, in a recent chat with Punch, criticised the recent visit of the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria to President Jonathan. Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, said he had beef with those who went to visit the president because the president is yet to set his priorities right with regard to Nollywood. “The government should stop giving Actors’ Guild cash, because we don’t know how to handle it. Some people will go to the office, process the money and squander it and we (actors) never benefit from such goodwill. “If they (government) can give us a structure or land, ... more »

“The Super Eagles are going to the World Cup with the sole intention of making Nigeria and Africa proud, ’’ he said in an interview published on CAF website on Tuesday.
Maigari said top quality warm-up matches had been arranged for the Eagles to keep them in form ahead of the global football fiesta.
The New Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that FIFA World Cup is scheduled to hold from June 12 to July 13.
He added:“Nigeria is going to Brazil to make sure that we make the entire continent of Africa proud.
“We want to show that African football has grown and improved a lot over the years.
“Under my leadership at NFA, we have done away with short-term planning.
“Instead, we are focused on long-term objectives and planning. Very soon, the team will be moving to the training camp to prepare for the biggest world football event.
“We have arranged top quality warm-up matches for our team to give as much adequate preparations as possible.”

“Each of the 32 teams that qualified for the World Cup cannot be underrated. We will go to Brazil and set out to give and do our best and see how far that takes us.”
Maigari expressed the hope that a good blend of youths with experienced players would produce positive results for Nigeria.
“What we have done with our team is to mix these young players with experienced ones.
“We did this during the Africa Cup of Nations and FIFA Confederations Cup in 2013 and it is a strategy that we believe will serve us well,” he said. (NAN)

I’m Not Leaving Before World Cup – Prandelli

Cesare Prandelli has ruled out the possibility of parting ways with Italy before the World Cup, despite his long-term future being in limbo.
The Azzurri lost 1-0 to Spain on Wednesday in an international friendly as they continue their build-up to the summer’s tournament in Brazil, where they have been grouped with Uruguay, England and Costa Rica.
Prandelli had been linked with a departure from the national set-up in recent months, although the coach claimed in early March that he had changed his mind and wanted to remain coaching the Euro 2012 finalists.
Regardless, the former Fiorentina trainer says that he has no intention of leaving his position before the World Cup and has demanded that the nation steps up to match competition from the likes of la Roja.
“If I find an agreement for a contract renewal, good; otherwise I will still stand firm,” he is quoted by Ansa as saying. “If I left it would be an embarrassment for me: the World Cup is too important.
“Europe moves on quickly and we have to keep in touch with other nations. We do not have big names or big numbers, but we must make up for that with great ideas.
The Italy boss was also heavily critical of his players’ fitness in comparison to Vicente del Bosque’s men and thinks that they were vastly inferior in sharpness compared to the world and European champions on Wednesday.
“At this moment of the season the fitness levels compared to Spain are almost embarrassing,” he told Rai Sport. “We need to work hard, as to play with a high tempo we need intensity in our running.
“We wanted to win the ball back early, we never managed it because we weren’t physically sharp enough. I’ll be honest, I did not expect the players to have these fitness levels.”

Okocha Wants Osaze, Uche, Yobo, Included In World Cup Team

Augustin Okocha, former Super Eagles’ prolific midfielder, on Saturday suggested the inclusion of Osaze Odemwingie, Ikechukwu Uche and Joseph Yobo in the team to represent Nigeria at the World Cup finals in Brazil.
Okocha told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the trio would apply their experience for the team to perform well in Brazil.
“The three players have been an integral part of the Eagles for long and they are also quality players that play regular competitive matches in Europe.
“They are hardworking players that are aware of the challenges and the expectations of the team in a World Cup competition, especially Yobo and Odemwingie.
“Their experiences really matter in a World Cup setting, while Uche’s call-up will be great because he has been a fantastic player yet to feature at this level,’’ Okocha said.
The ex-international also lauded plans to feature young players in the tournament, describing it as a positive development.
“The young players we parade have proved themselves by qualifying for the World Cup in Brazil. They went ahead to win the 2013 African Nations Cup in South Africa.
“They are indeed players to write home about. However, the World Cup is a different ball game, so they need to play at top level.
“The World Cup is a different ball game where experience and discipline matter; so a blend of these young players with the older ones, will yield good result,’’ he suggested.
The Brazil 2014 World Cup would begin on June 12.
Jermain Defoe

Defoe Hopes For World Cup Place

Jermain Defoe is hopeful his form for Toronto will see him book a place in England‘s World Cup squad.
The striker scored two goals inside the opening 25 minutes of his debut for the MLS side on Saturday as Toronto beat Seattle Sounders 2-1 in their opening game of the new season.
Roy Hodgson will announce his provisional 30-man squad for the tournament in mid-May and Defoe says all he can do is concentrate on his performances for his new side and hope the manager takes note.
“I think the most important thing for me is just to focus on playing here, winning games, and working hard for the team and obviously, trying to score goals,” he told reporters.
“Obviously with the England thing, you know obviously it’s gonna be at the back of my mind, but I’m sure if someone said to Roy Hodgson ‘you know, if you haven’t seen, Jermain scored two goals,’ then maybe he won’t be surprised.”
Defoe has 19 goals in 55 appearances for England.

The police in Lagos on Tuesday said they had arrested a 27-year-old woman for allegedly inflicting injuries on a 10-year-old girl over alleged bed-wetting.
The Spokeswoman of the Lagos State Police Command, DSP. Ngozi Braide, made the disclosure when she presented the suspect to newsmen,
She said that the offence was allegedly committed on Feb. 29.
Braide said that the suspect, who claimed to work with a private security company in Lagos allegedly, beat up the victim with stick and inflicted injuries on the body of the girl.
“On Feb. 29, the police at Onikan Division got information that a little girl was in one hospital in a critical condition.
“The officers went there and found the victim with her face and hands swollen as a result of beating.
“The victim was later referred to the Military Hospital, Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, for better treatment as previous hospitals rejected her, due to her condition.
“An NGO, the Hands that Cares, was also invited into the case by a good Nigerian.
“The NGO has taken over the case with a view to settling the hospital bills, while calling for prosecution of the suspect.
“The State CID, Panti-Yaba, has investigated the case and the suspect will be charged to court.
“The legal department of the State CID would advise us on the offence she would be charged with.
“We are going to prosecute the case in collaboration with the NGO,’’ Braide said.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the occasion, the National Coordinator of Hands that Cares, Mrs Jacinta Nworie, said that the suspect was a younger sister to the victim’s father.
Nworie said that the suspect allegedly “collected” the girl from her father in Kogi State under the guise that she would train her in Lagos.
“The condition we met the girl in the hospital was bad.
“The victim told us that the suspect allegedly bit her with her tooth, inserted hot ointment into her private part and used sticks on her body.
“We met a man who claimed to be her father pleading that the suspect should be released as it is a family matter, but we are not so sure he is the father.
“We will release the girl to him if he can provide evidence as to his relationship with the girl,’’ Nworie said.
The suspect, who also spoke with NAN, said that she never meant to inflict the injuries on the girl, stressing that she was only angry with her for bed-wetting. (NAN)

‘8 Civilians Killed During Friday’s Barracks Attack’

Chairman of the State Special Emergency Relief Committee, Bulama Mali Gubio, has said that about eight civilians died during the Friday attack on military barracks in Maiduguri, Borno State by members of the Boko Haram sect.
Gubio, who disclosed this  during a relief material distribution exercise to residents who suffered during the attack, said about five communities around the barracks were affected by the attack.
He said,  “From what we gathered from affected communities, eight people died. These are not included in the numbers of insurgents killed. These are civilians. Some of those wounded are still in the hospital.
“In term of material loss, it was a colossal but the casualty was not as high as we thought judging from the over three hours of bombardment that took place”,
Governor Kashim Shettima, who was out of the country when the attack took place, had constituted the special committee on Saturday. He also directed that relief material should be made available to the victims.
The Gubio-led committee had yesterday visited Giwa Barrack of the 21 Armoured Brigade and the affected surrounding communities of Fori, Koreri, Wadia,,Abbari and Gambori villages to present trucks of assorted relief material for onward distribution to affected victim.
“What we’re doing now is to distribute food items and non food items to the victims and affected communities at least to address their immediate need. We aren’t going to put the people in camps as is often the case because most of them are not use to such life and unwanted persons could infiltrate them. The state government would later rebuild their burnt houses”, said the committee chairman.
The committee presented five trucks of foodstuffs, clothes, cooking utensils and N1 million to leaders of each of the affected communities, while the relief sent to the barracks was received by the Chief of Staff to the Brigade Commander of the 21 Armoured Brigade, Col John Ekperende who expressed thanks to the Borno State government for the gesture.
Chairman of Jere Local, Alhaji Yankus and his counterpart in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Abdulkadir Rahis, in whose councils most of the victims of the attack are residing said the relief material that was estimated about N27 million.
The committee said the relief items distribution forms the first phase of their assignment as the next phase would involve building destroyed homes for the affected villagers.

Benue: Gunmen Burn Pregnant Woman, Butcher Son, Shoot Others

Barely 24 hours after suspected Fulani herdsmen attacked Tulen and Agasha communities in Guma local government area of Benue State, gunmen yesterday burnt to death a pregnant woman, butchered her son, and killed  several farmers in a Makurdi neighbourhood.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the pregnant woman and her deceased son had gone to farm at Iwenge village, near Welfare quarters located along Makurdi- Otukpo road of the state capital. They were working in the farm at about 10am when the gunmen killed them.
Yesterday, pandemonium broke out at Kanshio village when the youths of the affected area conveyed the corpses of the deceased farmers to the palace of the Ter Makurdi, Chief Sule Abenga, and insisted an end to the lingering crisis.
But Chief Sule Abenga told newsmen yesterday that the attack was mischievous and that the action of the youths to have moved corpses to his house was also deliberate because of the allegation that traditional rulers were accused to have hand in the crisis.
The youths barricaded the highway, resulting to traffic congestion which lasted for several hours.
Sources at the Ter Makurdi residence said when the gunmen invaded the farm of the deceased woman and her son, some passers-by quickly rushed to the place to render help but they were overwhelmed by the invaders.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ezeala, confirmed the incident and said the dead bodies had been moved to the mortuary while investigation is ongoing,
Meanwhile, there was serious disagreement between soldiers and youths at Tse-Kucha where the Gboko plant of Dangote Cement is situated. Four persons were reportedly shot and killed and scores injured in the violence that ensued. Tse-Kucha is located on Gboko-Makurdi highway.
It was gathered that one of the workers at the cement factory had stolen a spare tyre and was caught by the soldiers who allegedly shot and killed him instantly. Another version said a young man was in the bush to empty his bowel when he was shot by a soldier who mistook him for a Fulani herdsman.
This resulted in the crisis leading to the barricade of the Gboko-Makurdi expressway by irate youths.

Reps To Probe Killings Of Nigerians Students Abroad

The House of Representatives has mandated its Committee on Diaspora, Justice and Foreign Affairs to investigate indiscriminate killings of Nigerian students across the world and report back within two weeks.
This was sequel to a motion moved by the chairman of the House Committee on Diaspora, Hon Abike Dabiri- Erewa who raised it as a matter of urgent national importance during plenary yesterday.
The lawmaker had given a breakdown of Nigerian students that were killed under mysterious circumstances in Ghana, Russia, South Africa, Malaysia and the UAE. ‎
While leading the debate on the motion, she said: “The alarming increase in the number of Nigerian students being murdered abroad in search of education has made them an endangered species.
“In Ghana, four Nigerian students have been killed in mysterious circumstances in the last few months”, even as she informed her colleagues that in October 2013, 15-year-old Master Austine Ogukwe, an SS 3 Student of Ideal College Ghana, died mysteriously.
“In November, barely 26 days after Ogukwe’s death, two Nigerian students, Eddy and Charles of KNUS Federal University Accra, lost their lives during an excursion with their school; they claimed they got drowned.
“Only two weeks ago, Mr Godwin Ayogu, a 300-level Social Science student of University of Cape Coast Central Region was brutally killed on February 20, and his lifeless body was found on campus.”
She added that in Malaysia, the police killed one Tunde Adelabu from Ekiti State, a student of Lagenda University Nilai, Malaysia, and more than 80 Nigerian students are currently in danger in Malaysia according to reports with no intervention whatsoever from our embassy in Malaysia.

NIS Recruitment Tragedy: Don’t Blame Applicants, NLC Tells Minister

Thunder Entertainment
Following the unfortunate death of applicants last weekend in some centres during the recruitment exercise of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has told the minister of interior, Abba Moro not to blame the job seekers.
In a letter dated  March 17, 2014 and addressed to the minister through the comptroller of the NIS, Mr David Shikfu Parradang  the NLC described such avoidable deaths of job seekers as an unacceptable development which runs against the best employment practices as contained in Nigeria’s Labour Act and relevant conventions and resolutions of International Labour Organisation (ILO) guiding decent work as subscribed to by Nigeria.
“The minister is wrong to blame the victim applicants/job-seekers. The blames must go to the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) bureaucracy which reportedly collected illegally as much as N6billion from applicants but failed woefully in putting appropriate mechanisms for genuine aptitude tests and applicants crowd control,” NLC stated.
A copy of the letter signed by the vice president of NLC, Comrade Issa Aremu and made available to newsmen yesterday in Kaduna recalled that in 2008, similar exercise by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) ended in the unacceptable deaths of scores of applicants.
“Just as it was in 2008 (six years ago) the gender dimension of the deaths involved females and pregnant women in Benin. When we consider the pregnant applicants, we have invariably also killed unborn applicants.
“For a country that just marked International Women Day with fanfare, the deaths of female applicants do gross violence to the federal and state governments.
sclaim to respect human and women rights. These nation-wide unprovoked deaths have negatively dented the notorious image of Nigeria as a country in which lives are being casually wasted in the communities, on the roads and now at recruitment centres.
“When tragedies get addictive and widespread, (as it is regrettably becoming the regular trade mark of the Nigeria Immigration Service) these are no more “accidents” or a flash but clearly avoidable incidents. Nigerians do not need another probe panel on this tragedy. In 2008 under Yar’Adua’s administration after similar carnage called recruitment, the Federal Government instituted a probe into the circumstances which led to the death of scores of applicants nationwide.
“ The outcome of this probe was never known. Nigerians are probes-fatigue. Indeed the probe has not stopped this weekend’s industrial carnage. This certainly should not be another opportunity for probe-panel beating.
The letter also requested that the President must take preventive actions to prevent shameless exhibition of incompetence and non-service delivery by some of his ministers.
“The Honourable Minister of Interior must get to the bottom of the recent deaths, failing which he must resign from administering a Ministry increasingly notorious for employment scandals and employment tragedies.
NLC further averred that “The nation has witnessed much of distortions in the labour market in recent time from casualization to employment rackets at the centre of which has been the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS). We recall with pain how the former Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Mrs. Rose Chinyere Uzoma, allegedly sold ’4,000 employment slots approved by the Federal Government to job applicants and allocated some to other government personalities.
“A nation that is signatory to relevant ILO standards with respect to Decent Work should stop this serial tragedy.”
According to the letter NLC is demanding an immediate compensation for the victims of the avoidable recruitment stampede by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and an assurance that avoidable deaths of scores of Nigerian job seekers which has characterized NIS recruitment exercise in the recent time must stop
