SCHOOL-STUDENT-EXAM

Gunmen Abduct 100 SS3 Female Students

At least 100 final-year students of Government Girls’ Secondary School in Chibok local government area of Borno State were abducted and taken to an unknown destination by gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram on Monday night, eyewitnesses and security operatives have said.
LEADERSHIP gathered from impeccable sources that the gunmen who had engaged in a shootout with security operatives in Chibok town succeeded in killing a soldier and a police officer before taking the girls in a hijacked lorry into the bushes.
The students returned to school in spite of the recent shutdown of schools by the Borno state government to write their final-year examination (SSCE).
LEADERSHIP also gathered from credible sources from Chibok town which is about 135km from Maiduguri, the state capital, that some of the girls were able to escape while being driven away in the open truck.
The commissioner of police, Borno State command, Alhaji Lawan Tanko, was able to confirm the incident to journalists on phone but did not state the actual number of students that were abducted.
“We have received the report about the kidnapping of students by gunmen in a school in Chibok local government area last night; but we have no details on the actual number of the students for now; our men are still on the trail of the abductors,” he stated.
Efforts to get the local government chairman, Mr Babagana Chibok, were not successful as his number was not connecting. But a staff of Chibok local government told LEADERSHIP on phone that “the gunmen actually came in two Hilux pick-up vans but had to intercept a lorry that was conveying bags of grains to Askira-Uba local government; they offloaded the grains and ordered the abducted students into the lorry and took them away”.
He said, “We heard the girls wailing as the gunmen continued to shoot; we thought they were shooting the girls or something; but it was later on we understood from a few of them that were able to escape that they were being taken away by the gunmen.”
The local government official who pleaded not to be quoted for obvious security reasons told LEADERSHIP that some of the girls who had the village upbringing were able to demonstrate rare courage by holding unto tree branches as the lorry conveying them passed under low-branched tree and hung there until the unsuspecting kidnappers went far ahead before they would jump off the tree and flee back to the town.
“Many of the girls have been able to make it back through the bushes, but others are yet to be found; but we understand that the chairman of Chibok local government had led some security operatives to trail the track of the lorry,” said the LG worker.
A senior official of the State Security Service, who spoke off the record,  told LEADERSHIP that two security men – a policeman and a soldier — died during the attack and abduction.
“The abduction happened at about 10pm when the hoodlums called Boko Haram attacked the school, killed a soldier and policeman and took away over 100 female students in a lorry. Luckily enough, our men have been able to trace the abductors to where the lorry conveying the girls broke down and our men have moved in to intercept the gunmen; but we understand that some of the girls were able to escape and make it back to the town,” he said.
Though Chibok, a quiet agrarian town, shares a very close border with Sambisa Forest, it has never experienced any attack by Boko Haram except in some of the nearby villages under its local government area.
The Borno State government had not reacted on the incident by press time and all efforts to get the commissioner for education, Musa Inuwa Kubo, was not fruitful.

Kogi speaker’s children kidnapped
The criminal intent of kidnappers knows no bounds. They have thrown the family of the speaker of Kogi State House Of Assembly, Hon. Momojimoh Lawal, into a mournful mood.
Two of his children, Ogirima (7) and Afis (3), were yesterday abducted from the family home at Okengwe, in Okene local government area.
The chief press secretary to the speaker, Mr Austine Akubor, who confirmed the incident to our reporter from Okene, stated that the men were said to have scaled the fence into the compound of the speaker where the wife and children were staying in Okene.
He noted that the speaker was at Lokoja when a call came informing him about the incident.
According to information gathered, he said, the men came into the compound of the speaker armed with dangerous weapons. They met his wife and demanded the children at gunpoint and took the children in the vehicle of the wife.
Akubor stated that the abductors, who called the speaker with the wife’s cell phone, hadnot contacted anybody for a ransom but the incident has been reported to the police and other security agencies.

Benue: Herdsmen kill 8 in Agatu
As the various working committees set up to broker peace between the Fulani herdsmen and farmers in Benue State continue their reconciliation efforts, some armed herdsmen yesterday killed eight people in Agatu local government area of the state.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the attackers numbering over 100 stormed Obagaji town , the headquarters of Agatu LGA, overpowered the military men stationed in the area and started shooting the residents and burning houses.
The member representing Agatu state constituency, Alhaji Sule Audu, said the deceased had gone to fetch sand for building, with a tipper in the river while others were in the market selling before the gunmen invaded.
The Agatu Elders Committee yesterday condemned the heinous attack on the people despite the peace agreement signed between the Benue State government and the leaders of the Fulani herdsmen.
The committee stated its position in a statement signed by the chairman, Mr Sule Ngbede, and secretary, Mr Abu Onum. They lamented that the deployed soldiers have not been patrolling flashpoints and that the yesterday attack happened under their nose.
They appealed to relevant authorities to ensure immediate redeployment of soldiers to all strategic areas to enable displaced people return to their villages to continue with their farming activities to avoid imminent famine.
The state police public relations officer (PPRO), Daniel Ezeala, a superintendent of police, confirmed the report, adding that the remains of the six dead victims had been moved to the mortuary.

Tambuwal donates blood
The speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, has cautioned against politicising and putting religious colouration to Monday’s bombing in Abuja, saying all leaders in the country must rise up against terrorism.

The speaker who was escorted around the emergency wards by the minister of health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, and some top hospital staff later proceeded to the National Blood Transfusion Centre to donate blood for the victims.
Speaking to newsmen after the visit, Tambuwal warned against “playing politics with issue of insecurity”.
“It (bombing) is not about any religion. As leaders in this country, we must all come together and support the government in addressing this challenge (insecurity). We should stop playing politics with the issue of insecurity. From what I have seen among the victims, I doubt if they are members of any political party. We should stop playing politics. We should address the issue and it is not about any religion. It is unfortunate; we must come together. We must rise to the challenge and address this challenge,” he said.

Reacting from Washington DC, USA,  where he had travelled to deliver a paper at the Johns Hopkins University, before the incident, the deputy president of the Senate insisted that the collective will of the nation would never be broken and urged Nigerians to stand against the forces of darkness.

No justification for the act
- Northern governors

Chairman of the forum and Niger State governor Dr Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, through a statement signed by his chief press secretary Danladi Ndayebo, expressed the forum’s condolences to the families of the victims, adding that “no grievance can justify such a dastardly act against defenceless citizens”.

Nigeria not doing enough with CCTV cameras – Gusau
The chairman, House Committee on ICT, Hon. Ibrahim Gusau, has said that Nigeria is not making good use of the close-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed to enhance security.
Speaking during a courtesy call on the committee by executives of the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) yesterday in Abuja, Gusau said that Nigerians underestimate the importance of CCTV and have failed to optimally utilize it to enhance security in the nation.
Gusau maintained that if CCTV cameras had been mounted in areas that have massive collection of people, like Nyanya, security operatives would not have problems in fishing out perpetuators of the dastardly act.

The alert however stated that security measures in Nigeria remained heightened due to threats posed by extremist groups, stressing that US citizens may encounter additional police and military checkpoints, additional security, and possible roadblocks throughout the country.
“Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates. Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security and follow instructions of local authorities. We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Nigeria enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveller Enrolment Program (STEP),” the statement reads in part, adding that the STEP enrolment would give the Americans living in Nigeria the latest security updates.

IYC indicts presidency
The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) yesterday indicted the Presidency over the spate of bombing rocking the northern axis of the country.
The IYC said the Presidency could not claim ignorance of the identities of the sponsors of the dastardly act, which has led to the death of many Nigerians, particularly in the north-east geopolitical zone of the country.
The group in a statement issued by its spokesman, Mr Eric Omare, in a reaction to Monday’s bomb explosions at Nyanya market, Abuja, in which over 100 persons were reported dead, asked President Goodluck Jonathan to speedily identify and punish the sponsors of the heinous crime.

End To Fight Against Insurgency Unpredictable – CAS

As April 19, the last day for the ongoing state of emergency rule in the northeast states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe due to the unending terror attacks approaches, the military yesterday noted that it was always impossible to predict the end to any operation against terrorism or insurgency.
The military has been dispatching troops to the three states with a view to stopping the insurgency by the Boko Haram Islamists, but from all indications, the counter-insurgent operations, according to the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adesola Amosu, would go beyond  April 19.
Addressing Defence Correspondents in his office on the 50th anniversary of the Nigerian Air Force, Air Marshal Amosu explained that the complexity of the operations against terrorism anywhere in the world makes it difficult to predict when it would end.
He, however, gave the assurance that the elusive peace would have been restored before February 2015 to ensure that the general election holds there.
He said, “Don’t forget that in the fight against terrorism and the insurgency, there are about four aspects involved: you have the issue of the counter- and the anti-, the issue political intervention and economic situation. But the first is that if there is no peace, the only thing you can do is the anti – you can go ahead with the counter- and the anti – terrorism.
“The aspect of introducing the economic activities is almost suspended if the peace is not there. There are variables that would prevent you from achieving your target date.
“But for terrorism and insurgency, you definitely cannot have a target date. Even if you have put everything under control, you may still have sporadic attacks, a well -planned organised attack, one or two of these terrorists may show up with AK 47 (rifles). Even if it is one or two shots he fired, you know that is a terrorist attack, so, it is difficult to give a date, but I want to assure you we would continue working hard to ensure that we bring the entire situation under control.”

Military Raises The Alarm: Herdsmen Targeting Abuja

Military Raises The Alarm: Herdsmen Targeting Abuja

The military yesterday alleged that the herdsmen that have been killing innocent people in some states in the north are targeting Abuja, the seat of the government, and cautions the populace against identifying with them.
The herdsmen, who have been operating under the cover of the night, according to the military, were hired by some unscrupulous faceless people to unleash terror on the populace.
The terrorists have killed about 2, 000 innocent people in the last few weeks.
The military has been dispatching troops to Benue, Nasarawa and Plateau states at the directive of President Goodluck Jonathan.
Some top officers that were sent to Benue on fact-finding mission were said to have written a damning report that showed that the herdsmen were coming into the country from the neighbouring countries to attack, kill and destroy.
The report, according to a top officer of the Defence Headquarters, also revealed that the herdsmen are planning to launch some sporadic attacks on the federal capital. Speaking with LEADERSHIP, a senior military officer quoted excerpts from the report but promised that the military is up to the task of stopping them from entering Abuja.
He said: “It is a pity some people who do not understand the agenda of these criminals pretending to be Fulani herdsmen are identifying with them and attacking the military for dealing with them. These hoodlums, we believe, were hired by some faceless people in the country from the neighbouring countries. They have attacked Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa states, and you would know that Nasarawa is the closest state to Abuja.
“Already they have some camps in Kogi, Niger, and Kaduna states. Some of them are said to be living inside one big forest in Niger (State). All these states surround the Federal Capital Territory. Their mission in those states is to displace the indigenes, take over their land and pretend to be taking care of their cattle. They have already done that in Benue State where two local government councils were sacked; most of the towns and villages there were razed down; many were killed and these forced those who survived their attacks to relocate.
“These herdsmen were coming from the neighbouring Nasarawa State. We saw some of them with their cattle grazing in the two local governments where their people have run away and they pretend as if nothing unusual has happened. In one of the villages they razed down, they used marker to write ‘Nasarawa State’ as if they were doing annexation. Once they settled down in all these states, their next move is Abuja, but this we would not allow, no matter the propaganda being used against the military.”

Military faults NHRC report
Also, the military has faulted the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) report which indicted the Nigerian Army and the Department of State Services (DSS) for their role in the killing of eight people in the Apo District of the Federal Capital Territory on September 20, last year.
The commission, through its chairman, Professor Chidi Odinkalu, said the Army and the DSS failed to prove that the eight persons killed and 11 others injured due to an attack launched by the security operatives in Apo were members of Boko Haram.

Distress call saves community as troops continue onslaught on terrorists
The Defence Headquarters yesterday said it was a timely distress call that saved communities besieged by terrorists in search of food around the Lake Chad area.
The terrorists who were said to be heavily armed scampered for safety on sensing the approach of troops before they could carry out their mission.
According to a statement issued in Abuja  and signed by the Defence spokesman, Major General Chris Olukolade, the troops of the Multi-National Joint Task Force on patrol of the area have so far recovered some arms and ammunition left behind by the fleeing terrorists.

10 killed, 15 injured in Wukari
Over 10 people were yesterday reportedly killed, 15 injured and 20 houses burnt down in Jibu village in Wukari local government area of Taraba State. A resident of the village, Mr Dan Anguyo, told LEADERSHIP  at Wukari  that the armed men identified to be Jukums numbering over 39 invaded  the village in the early hours of yesterday shooting people and burning houses.
Anguyo, who said he narrowly escaped the attack, also confirmed to LEADERSHIP that nobody knows the actual reasons behind the attack on the innocent people.
When contacted, the  spokesman of the state police command, ASP Joseph Kwaji, noted that the command had quickly drafted more of its men to the affected area to bring the ugly situation under control while investigation into the matter continued.

Zamfara massacre: Reps summon IGP, Gusau, NSA
Worried about the death of over 200 people in the hands of gunmen in Maru and Zurmi local government areas of Zamfara State, the House of Representatives has invited the minister of defence, Gen.  Aliyu Gusau (rtd), and the inspector-general of police, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar,  to appear before its committee on national security to shed light on the killings .
The decision was taken yesterday during plenary, following the adoption of a motion of urgent national importance moved by Hon. Ibrahim Gusau (PDP, Zamfara).
The lawmakers also directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to immediately deliver relief materials to the distressed citizens of the affected communities.
Leading debate on the motion, Gusau called the attention of his colleagues to the April 3, 2014, killings where over 30 people were ambushed and killed in the towns of Yar-Tsaba and Birnin-Tsaba in Zurmi local government area. He went further to add that, on the April 5, over 200 innocent citizens were mercilessly killed in Yar-Galadima village by people suspected to be Fulani herdsmen.
He went further to inform the lawmakers that the gunmen who numbered over 100 operated freely for about four hours shooting at children, traders, vigilante, community leaders and clerics.
The incidents, Gusau lamented, has led to fear among residents of many villages in the affected areas over a repeat of the attacks. According to him, this had led to many fleeing their homes.
“The Fulani herdsmen have gradually become more daring, well organized and well-armed that no small units of security personnel can repel their attacks when they strike.
“These groups of attackers are becoming more coordinated and if not quickly terminated can turn into yet another organized terror group which can pose additional dimension to the security challenges in the country.
“The above gruesome statistics were for Zamfara State alone. Similar incidents have been recurring in Benue and Nasarawa states where several people were killed,” he said.
Meanwhile, the House has advised the federal government to construct a military barracks in Doma, headquarters of Doma local government area of Nasarawa State, to accommodate a battalion to boost security in the southern senatorial district of the state where there have been a series of attacks in recent times.
While adopting the resolution which was sequel to a motion of urgent national importance sponsored by Hon. Mohammed Onawo (PDP) yesterday, the House also mandated its committees on Works and Army to ascertain why the project was not executed.

Needless killings must stop – Mark
Senate president David Mark has lamented the incessant killings in the north-central and north-east regions of the country, saying these needless killings must stop.
The Senate president made this plea after a point of order raised by Senator Kabir Marafa on the recent massacre in Zamfara.
“If there is any birthday gift that I would want, it is for us to end these needless and senseless deaths that we have in the country today.
“We wake every day and we hear of people being killed. First it was single unit — two, three people died; then tens, now hundreds, and we don’t want it to go beyond this, and I hope and pray that all Nigerians will ensure that we bring these needless deaths to an end,” he said.

Nasarawa killings: Fulani threatens to drag FG to criminal court
The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, the socio cultural group of Fulanis, have threatened to drag the Nigerian government before the International Criminal Court over the killings of Fulani herdsmen by  the Nigerian military in Nasarawa State.
Though the military authorities said those killed were insurgents who have terrorised farmers in Nasarawa and Benue states, the association said those killed were innocent Fulani, alleging that there is grand plot to eliminate the Fulani from Nigeria.
Addressing the press in Abuja, the Nasarawa State secretary of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Alhaji Mohammed Husseini, urged the government to tender a public apology and pay compensation to the families of those killed by soldiers.
He said, “Our people were killed in their houses which they have inhabited for over 30 years without committing any crime. We are convinced beyond reasonable doubt there is a grand plot to eliminate the Fulani from Nigeria. Otherwise there is no reason why a people will continue to be killed in their houses by government troops who are supposed to protect them.
“This time around we cannot keep quiet, even if it means going to the International Criminal Court, because what is being done to us amounts to genocide and ethnic cleansing.”
He said direct confrontation will never solve the issue, stressing that the Fulanis are open to positive dialogue that will resolve the issues.
He said though there may be bad eggs amongst the Fulanis “the primary responsibility of the government is to fish out the bad eggs and there are standard procedures for doing that”.
He warned that the approach by applied by the government may degenerate into a dangerous situation that will be very difficult to handle.

Village head, 10 others killed in Borno
Suspected Boko Haram militants, in the early hours of yesterday, stormed Takulari village, in restive Chibok local government area of Borno State, killing 11 people and setting several houses alight.
The residents told the Hausa service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) that a village head and several others were killed in the attack.

I’m An Ardent Supporter Of Polygamy – Jibola Dabo

Jibola-Dabo

I’m An Ardent Supporter Of Polygamy – Jibola Dabo

He’s what you’d call a consummate actor. Jibola Dabo from Ondo State has been in the movie industry for many decades and has been a source of inspiration to young ones in the field of make-believe. In this chat with SAMUEL ABULUDE, the AGN vice president (South West) bares his mind on his love life, Nollywood and why he is interested in politics.
What you are currently working on?
There is a movie I just finished shooting few weeks back. At the moment, I’m not working on any movie; I’m only working on my political vision. In terms of movies, I’ve concentrated on helping the younger ones that are coming into the industry to grow. I had something to do with Mnet series recently, most of the movies are targeted at helping the young ones to grow.
Who is the real Jibola Dabo?
I’m a very compassionate human being, a man who feels the pains of his people and a man who is too plain to a fault. That is why so many of my friends and colleagues keep asking if I can play politics considering my level of plainness. I’m a very straightforward man and I believe a politician can also be straightforward. I started a foundation recently in my place, and I know how it feels when someone comes to tell me he or she cannot pay school fees. I keep paying for the ones I can pay while I tell others to either exercise patience or look for an alternative.
Tell us about your kids and wives?
I have plenty of kids. I have five children and they have given me five grand children.
Are all your children from one woman?
No.
Does that mean you are a polygamous man?
People misunderstand what polygamy means. I’m an ardent supporter of polygamy. Every single man, mostly from Africa, is polygamous in nature. We are just deceiving ourselves. Polygamy means when you see a woman you love and desire, you marry her with the consent of your already married wife and bring her home. It’s not when you have one wife at home then you have others scattered in different other places- that is not polygamy. And not when you have three wives whereas you can’t even take care of one- that is an insult to polygamy.
There are so many women out there who just want to have a man as an umbrella, but we keep saying one man one woman. Yet the women keep suffering. We all know that we have much more women in this world than men-the ratio is too high. My father had six wives; my uncle that brought me up also had so many wives. What I’m saying is that it’s not illegal, we are not in America. Ironically, the white man would have one wife and still keep so many mistresses. If not, there wouldn’t have been an English word for concubines. That means it exists in their culture. Which is better, concubines or wives? In the days when polygamy was well respected, diseases were not rampant. It’s now that men hide to do it that strange sexually transmitted diseases have become the order of the day.
So sir, how many wives do you have?
I have only one but I have children from more than one woman. And it’s not because I had mistresses, it’s because I have lived in various countries including America, France and Britain. I’m this person that any woman that comes to me would always want to have something for me. I have had experience… I was with a woman and years later a child was brought to me-a child I didn’t know when it was conceived.
Do you intend having another wife soon?
I’m separated. But there is somebody in my life, and certainly I will remarry.
So what do women really see in you that makes you irresistible?
I don’t know what they see. But I have lots of respect for women. You would never see a woman who had been with me saying anything negative-I don’t abuse women.
Tell us more about your political aspiration?
It’s something that has been in the making for a while. For some time, I keep receiving invitations from people especially the youths in my state which is Ondo State to join the political race so as to effectively represent them. It’s not the normal cliché that my people want me. The invitations kept coming and I said to myself, I’m not a politician and I don’t have such money for politicking. It got to a point after I got honoured by the state as Ambassador for Culture and Tourism, It dawned on me that I was actually playing the politics indirectly (he laughs). And I said, ‘why don’t I try to get a piece of power, which will give me a voice to help my people?’ This is because if you don’t have power, you don’t have a voice and there is no way you can effectively help in changing anything. That was how I made up my mind to vie as member, House of Representatives, Owo/Ose Federal Constituency.
Why the choice of PDP?
When you get to my state for example, the most attractive party you might want to work with might be APC. People are beginning to think that APC is a South West thing and the best to associate with but I disagree with such partisan politics. My people called me and said they would follow me wherever I go. I realised that the party under which I can run and which can benefit my people is PDP. I’m tired of seeing my people in the opposition.
How do you think you can succeed under the PDP umbrella, considering its present challenges?
Where are the people that left PDP? Are they not all in APC? I still believe that the devil you know is better that the angel you don’t know. If PDP is so bad, is it the name that is bad or the people in there?
What are your plans when elected?
I grew up knowing pains and hunger. I know what my people need. I’ve already worked on my blueprint. Having played different roles as an actor including a president, senator etc, I’ve for long understood what it takes to effectively represent people.
How will you cope with the huge financial demand of political race?
Apart from using my personal finances, I’m also hoping that some people would throw their weights behind me. If we keep thinking that politics is a dirty game, then we will keep having the wrong people in positions of authorities ruling us the way they like.
After actualising your political ambition, will you dump acting?
Never! It’s basically a break. I will retire back into acting. And among the causes I will pursue over there, many will focus on this industry.
The movie Dirty Secret attracted lot of negative press for you, how do you feel about that?
Nigerians especially my fans should understand that someone has to tell the story. What they watched was not me; I hated that bisexual character that I played. For instance, I despise cigarette but I was seen very intimate with Muna who smokes. I’m not gay. That was just a movie role. Even after the act, I would sometimes step backwards and exhale all the tension for the ugly role. You can confirm that from the director. That wasn’t Jibola Dabo. I love women.
The movie only tried to depict that there are such men around us and I played the role, making it look so real. I was condemned even by friends for having sex with Tonto Dikeh but it was fake sex and the director and production crew were present during the scene. That we did it well meant that we played our roles well. We were just being professional.
You fathered a child with Binta Mogaji, how come you broke up and didn’t marry?
That is life for you. We were lovers and she gave me a lovely child. We did not plan then to marry each other though. But she has since married, so let us leave her out of this.

Keshi Defends World Cup List Tuesday

Keshi Defends World Cup List Tuesday

Except for a last minute changes, Super Eagles head coach, Stephen
Keshi will finally defend his much 35-man provisional list for the
2014 World Cup before the technical committee of the Nigeria Football
Federation (NFF) today.
The much awaited provisional list has been a subject of media debate
lately with both the technical committee and the coach appears to be
on collision and divided over the choice of players that will make the
list.
Chairman of the technical committee, Chris Green while speaking to
newsmen recently in Abuja, assured that the committee will not attempt
to impose any player on the former handler of the Togo and Mali’s
national teams.
“While we believe that only players that are playing well for their clubs should be invited because the World Cup is not a tea party, our job is a simple task.
Keshi has the overall decision on who goes to Brazil and fits into his
World Cup plan,” stated.
However, a top member of the technical committee who spoke LEADERSHIP
Sports on a condition of anonymity, insisted that they will not allow
the Big Boss, as Keshi fondly called to name any of his misfire CHAN
player for Brazil’s World Cup.
He vowed even as the committee will not want to interfere in the coach selection of players, it will ensure that the best are pick for the summer World Cup in Brazil.
“Our duty is to ensure that the players the coach will invited for the World Cup merit the invitation. World Cup is not a place to start experiment
players, so we must hit Brazil with our best legs.
“We can’t afford to gamble with those boys that misfire in the South
Africa’s CHAN tournament. I am sure the coach know exactly what to do
and he will even not try mention any those misfire boys name before
the committee because none of them can withstand the hit of soccer
that will be on display in Brazil,” he said.
Keshi had suggested that he may give opportunity to two or three of
the boys that distinguished themselves in the South Africa’s
tournament to fight for shirt in his World Cup squad.
“Some of them will make the team to the World Cup. It is just that I cannot disclose who, and who among them will make my list now but later I will bring
it out from my pocket,” Keshi was quoted in the media recently.

I’m Backing Wike For 2015 – Patience Jonathan

First lady Patience Jonathan has refuted a media report suggesting that she is manoeuvring politically to install three aspiring governorship candidates in Bauchi, Bayelsa and Rivers states in the 2015 general polls.
According to her, “the allegation in the story is the handiwork of those mischief makers who are bent on promoting bickering and animosity among people who have always been together working for the improvement of Rivers State, and should be discountenanced”.
In a statement issued by her media aide, Mr Ayo Adewuyi, Mrs Jonathan who described the said report as a figment of the writers’ imagination noted that she does not meddle in the affairs and selection process of the ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The statement made available to LEADERSHIP reads in part: “Consequently, there is no way she can dictate or install anybody into political offices. In the case of Rivers State, the First Lady wishes to state categorically that the Supervising Minister of Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, is the leader of PDP in Rivers State and he enjoys the followership of the people of the State. The First Lady is solidly behind Chief Wike.
“The people of Rivers State are also solidly behind Chief Wike and are prepared to follow him. “It is therefore mischievous to insinuate that Mrs Jonathan is working to ensure that the governorship candidate comes from one of the riverine areas of Rivers State which may not be where the people are going.”
“It is also imperative to state that First Lady is always with the people and will continue to go with the wish and expectations of the people. Mrs Jonathan has not withdrawn her support for Chief Wike at any time and will always work for the interest and the good of Rivers people. As far as the First Lady is concerned, there is NO SHAKING in Rivers State.”
On her alleged plans to position some candidates to take over from the governors of Bayelsa and Bauchi states in an attempt to pit them against the governors, the statement noted: “Dr Waripomowei Dudafa is not only a son to the President but his staff and very close to the family. Dr Dudafa is not ready to quit his job to contest governorship election. Similarly, the FCT Minister has been a competent and loyal appointee of Mr President. Both of them are loyal to Mr President and their Governors.
“They are sons of the First Lady as the mother of the nation, who also has very cordial relationships with the governors in question and will never interfere in any process that will lead to the emergence of governorship candidates in the states.
“Mrs Jonathan appeals to the Governors of Bayelsa and Bauchi states to ignore the mischief makers who are bent on disrupting the peace prevailing in those states.
“The First Lady is a mother of peace who believes in the supremacy of the party and democratic principles at all levels and does not dump her friends because of politics, whether they are contesting or not. She therefore urges all Nigerians to uphold the truth at all times, and not be swayed by actions of mischief makers.”

It further accepted that the allegation made by the National Boundaries Commission against the office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation over the funding of two non-existent boundary demarcations be properly investigated, just as it also accepted the management audit of the National Institute of Sports.
The federal government in the white paper, however, rejected the recommendation for an amendment in name and status of the Federal Civil Service Commission to the Federal Public Service Commission. BON, OSMI Sign Deal To Transmit World Cup Matches Live

The Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) has signed a deal with the Optima Sports Management International (OSMI), the exclusive 2014 FIFA World Cup terrestrial broadcast rights owners for the Nigerian territory, for the free-to-air rights in Nigeria for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Speaking at the signing ceremony in Abuja yesterday, BON chairman, Abubakar Jijiwa, said all the 64 matches of the tournament, match previews, highlights and other properties associated with the world cup will be transmitted to Nigerians live on the terrestrial Tv and radio station in country.
“On behave of the teeming millions of Nigerian listeners and viewer, we have always tried to the best of our ability to do what is best for the interest of Nigerians and Nigeria’s economics and most importantly service delivery to our listeners and viewers. Therefore in almost all major national and global tournaments we have been trying to engage relevant agency to ensure that our listeners and viewers get the best in term of the right for transmission of whatever events that are taking place. “We have had several discussion and come to an agreement to give all broadcasters in Nigeria the right to transmit the matches of the 2014 World Cup. All the matches, preview, highlights and all associated properties of the event,” he said.
Jijiwa noted that unlike previous agreement of rights to free air, which foreign media rights holders always try to short change the nation and also blackmail the BON into accepting the offers, the rights to air of the 2014 World Cup will be a win-win situation for all participants. “Part of our concern at BON has been that most often time foreign media right holders come into Nigeria with their right riding short of us. In most cases we were blackmail into accept some of the agreement until the last Africa Cup of Nations where we stood our ground to say no, enough is enough.
“Learning from this experience we are today given a complete Nigerian company, one of us and one who come with background and pedigree of very good experience in media right. Therefore what is going to happen is this, unlike the previous agreement we have had in which member of BON use to invest their own funds, our partner, OMSI is going to deal financially with FIFA.  Our own is to transmit the Games and work out visual agrees figures that will come to us in featuring the games. It is going to be a win-win situation for every broadcasting organisation in the agreement,” Jijiwa stated.
On his part, Mr Rotimi Pedro, the executive chairman, OSMI, said the agreement is built on the trust that exists between BON and OSMI. “We treasure the relationship and understanding we have developed with BON over the years. Our mandate at OSMI is very clear, which is hinged around delivering quality sports programming to the generality of Nigerians. We don’t believe that premium sports programmes should be the exclusive preserve of the elite. This is why we have acquired the broadcast rights for this year’s World Cup as we have been doing since Sydney 2000 Olympics. BON has been our partner in progress because the objective of the two organisations tally – delivering the best programming to the masses,” he stated.

Neandertal and Modern Human Skulls

Neandertal and Modern Human Skulls
The skull of Homo neanderthalensis, left, differs considerably from that of anatomically modern humans, or Homo sapiens, right. Neandertals had large, protruding faces, low, sloping foreheads, and heavy brow ridges. In contrast, modern humans have flatter faces, high foreheads, and less prominent brow ridges. Neandertals also had more pronounced and powerful jaws than do modern humans.

Preserving The Environment Against Mining Hazards

Mining-site-2

Preserving The Environment Against Mining Hazards

One of the negative effects of illegal mining is the undeniable destruction of the environment as a result of non- or poor remediation. As the rainy season begins again, Ruth Tene Natsa writes on the need for miners, and stakeholders, to ensure that remediation is carried out on the surfaces where mining activities occur out so as to protect and preserve the environment
Remediation is the process of restoring both land and environment to its natural state after mining activities that have exposed the top soil through digging.
Non-remediation of mined environments portends high risks of flooding, exposure to dangerous minerals such as lead and even physical danger for both humans and animals.
Nigeria is a country blessed beyond measures with an abundance of solid minerals in virtually all the 774 local government areas.
The several coal reserves which it has in abundance and the recent discovery of gold in several states of the federation, among many others, make Nigeria a mining nation. Unfortunately with the negligent and lackadaisical attitude of the federal government to the development of the sector, while paying lip service to its reforms, illegal miners continue to have a field day in the mining sector. This is even as government claims it lacks the wherewithal to fully monitor the activities of these miners who continue to employ unsafe mining techniques.
In an exclusive interview with LEADERSHIP, the immediate past president of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS), Akinola George, said the non-remediation of mining environments is not only hazardous to the environment but dangerous to the life. Recounting a survey by the World Bank in the 36 states of the federation, including the FCT in 2011/2012, George recalled that “the survey revealed that of 1,218 abandoned mines, over 40 were very hazardous, 221 were moderately hazardous, while 957 were mildly hazardous.”
The geoscientists were worried that aside being dangerous to the environment, the animal deposits and various poisonous expositions posed cancer risks to the humans around. They, therefore, urged the government to not only remediate but to ensure the immediate reformations of such mines.
Although  the federal government, through the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development,  have made efforts to organise the illegal miners into cooperatives, their activities continue to be regrettably dangerous to farmlands, the environment, animals and most importantly the residents of their host communities who are continually exposed to contaminated lands. Holes dug and left uncovered during mining could serve as traps for animals and unsuspecting humans who could fall into them without warning and heavy rains could wash off the soil, making it unsafe for farming activities.
Illegal mining and non-remediation has so many implications, both directly and indirectly, with the flooding experience witnessed in several parts of the nation in 2012. There is no doubt that if the land had been properly maintained and the drainages were in order, the calamity may have been averted.
The lead poisoning incidence in Zamfara  State was another direct consequence of non-remediation. The lead was washed into other uncontaminated environments, thereby  defiling  them and exposing whole communities to the menace where over 400 children died and others were brain damaged.
Meanwhile, in a bid to ensure that mining and quarry sites operate within the constituted laws guiding the sector, the minister of mines and steel development, Mr Musa Mohammed Sada, has threatened to shut down quarrying operations in companies that fail to comply with acceptable standards.
While leading a delegation on inspection of quarrying sites in Abuja, he threatened to shut down activities in Hongyum Quarry limited and called for the revocation of license to Perfect Stone quarry in the FCT.

[19 million farmers shut out of agric insurance]
More than 19 million commercial farmers in Nigeria, constituting 96.5 percent of the nation’s commercial farming community, are exposed to the hazards of bankruptcy should natural disasters strike, BusinessDay investigations have shown.
This is because of the estimated 20 million commercial farmers in the country, only 700,000 (about 3.5 percent) have accessed agricultural insurance in the last five years, leaving 19.3 million who do not have insurance cover. For these, should a natural disaster occur, the burden of relief would fall on government, family and friends, and where these fail, they would likely become indigent.
According to a recent report by Enhancing Financial Innovation and Access (EFInA) – ‘Access to Financial Services in Nigeria 2012 Survey’ – out of the 5.98 million rural adults that experienced agricultural risk that year, only 70,600 used insurance. As a result, federal and state governments concerned spent hundreds of millions of naira to mitigate the effect, while the businesses of uninsured farmers who did not get compensation crashed and they had to sell assets or borrow money from family and friends to start all over again.
The objective of the agricultural insurance scheme, which has been run in Nigeria since 1987 when the National Agricultural Insurance Corporation (NAIC) was established, is to provide financial support to all categories of farmers who take up insurance policies in the event of losses arising from natural disasters. It also increases the flow of agricultural credit from lending institutions to the farmers when farming businesses are insured as well as minimises or eliminates the need for emergency assistance provided by government following agricultural disasters.
However, research surveys indicate that there is very low awareness of the scheme by farmers and many enlightened farmers are very wary of taking agricultural insurance policies.
But Bitrus Pembi, head, corporate communications, NAIC, says the new management of NAIC, which came on board a few weeks ago, has designed a very strategic plan to increase awareness among farmers and the uptake of agricultural insurance by tapping into the Agricultural Transformation Agenda (ATA) of the current government.
“Apart from English, we have translated our leaflets and jingles into the three major Nigerian languages – Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba – and would be[19 million farmers shut out of agric insurance] (Continued)
Industry sources, however, believe there should be more companies to service the agricultural industry apart from NAIC, which started in 1987, and Industrial and General Insurance Company (IGI) which was given the go-ahead just last year by the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM).
They also insist that the agricultural insurance market is still not competitive to insurance companies because the 50 percent subsidy provided by the Federal Government, in addition to the 25 percent subsidy provided by the state, are still given only through NAIC.
Therefore, farmers pay only 25 percent of their insurance premiums if they take up agric insurance with NAIC. But with IGI and any other entrant into the agric insurance industry, the farmers or agribusiness operators are expected to pay 100 percent.
These industry watchers, therefore, urge the removal of subsidies to liberalise the market. But the removal of subsidies is not a welcome development to many farmers.
“I rear broilers (chicken for meat) and so I have to buy a new stock of chicks every six weeks and I am expected to pay premium every time I procure a new stock. This is a heavy cost on my business due to the regularity of paying premiums. But NAIC pays when there are disasters,” says Olaseni Salako, a Lagos-based poultry farmer.
There are, however, so many complaints of non-payment of claims. Gani Abdulghaniyy Alabi-Ojolowo, a farmer says he and a group of farmers took insurance for the cultivation of cowpeas (beans) and it did not rain at the time expected due to climate change and they lost most of the crops as a result.
“But our application for claims was rejected by NAIC because they said we ought to have known that such a problem would arise and guard against it. I have never taken another agric insurance since then,” Alabi-Ojolowo says.
Pembi, however, says there are issues associated with agricultural insurance

I’ll Knock Down Camlin – Bash Ali

Legendary boxer, Bash Ali, who is still basking in the excitement of federal government’s support for his ‘Guinness Book of World Records Title Fight Project’ has declared that he will shock the world by knocking down his American opponent, Rick Camlin during the much anticipated fight.
Nigeria’s government through the minister of sports and chairman National Sports Commission (NSC), Bolaji Abdullahi, on Tuesday in Abuja, inaugurated a 15-man Local Organising Committee (LOC) to stage the fight. WBF Cruiserweight champion, Bash Ali, has in the last seven years struggled to enter his name in the Guinness Book of World Record as the oldest man to win a fight could.  “I feel great.
Sometimes, a disappointment can be a blessing in disguise. Because, if I had fought seven years ago, it is possible that somebody by now may have broken the record.
“So, I will be fighting at the age of 58, which means in this century or in the next, whoever that will have to break the record must be at least 60 years. But, I am not happy about the delay,’’ Ali said.
He also assured that he would defeat his opponent, adding that the 32 years old American is no match to him. “On the day of the fight, Bash Ali will shock the boxing world. I will knock down 32-year old Camlin like a bad child, because I am old enough to be his father,’’ he boasted.

Commonwealth Games: Coach Lauds Nigeria’ s Participation In Boxing

The Head Coach of the Lagos State Boxing Association, Wasiu Bisiriyu, on Tuesday lauded the inclusion of boxing in the sports Nigeria would participate in at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Ministry of Sports recently named shooting, taekwondo, judo, athletics, wrestling and boxing as the sports in which Nigeria has a comparative advantage.
Bisiriyu, while reviewing the association’s activities in 2013, told NAN in Lagos that boxing deserved the recognition and inclusion.
“We have an array of amateur boxers in my association that the country can rely on.
“It would have been an effort in futility after grooming boxers to a dependable state and they are not allow to participate in a big event like the Commonwealth Games,” the coach said.
Bisiriyu, who led the state’s boxers to the London invitational tournament in October, said that the tournament positively impacted on the boxers.
“We also have an assemblage of elite boxers discovered in the state’s monthly boxing competition; so, it is a good thing that most of them will be at the Games.
“Last August, the Nigeria Boxing Federation organised a national open championship in Abuja which was successful and applauded by the National Sports Commission (NSC),” he noted.
According to him, boxing strived in 2013.
“Moreover, boxing is one of the sports that Nigeria is identified with at the Commonwealth Games.
`I am confident that with proper motivation, Nigeria will do better at the Games to make up for the World Cup loss last October in Kazakhstan, where it won no medal,’’ he said.
The coach appealed to governments to assist boxers to succeed at the Commonwealth Games.
He said that international friendly matches and training tours would equip the boxers for the competition. (NAN)

Odemwingie Ready For Stoke Action

Stoke City new signing Osaze Odemwingie has expressed his readiness to get back to scoring ways for the Britannia Stadium lords.
The Super Eagles forward was part of an exchange deal that saw Trinidad and Tobago player Kenwyne Jones move to his former club Cardiff City.
He has not also hidden his intent to create chances for the team apart from his goal scoring responsibility.
“One of my strongest qualities is being able to put the ball into the back of the net, with either my right foot or my left foot, and I intend on doing that regularly here,” he told the club’s official website.
“I like to get myself into good positions on the field whereby I can get opportunities, and I know that with the quality of players here at the club, there will be days where we do create a lot of chances to score the goals.
Osaze hopes that club manager Mark Hughes explore his area of strength towards a successful outing with the club during his 18-month stay.
“I am sure that the manager and his staff know about me and I am certain they will use me to my strengths.
“They are very knowledgeable people and they must feel that I can bring something different to the team.
